Welcome to the home of the Southern Missouri
Rangers(SMR). Southern Missouri Rangers is the " new" name of a group of
individuals who have been active in the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting(CAS)
for quite some time. SMR organized in the winter of 2000 and is affiliated
with the parent organization, the Single Action Shooting Society(SASS).
SASS provides uniform rules for the sport of CAS. The members of SMR are
a group of dedicated cowboys and cowgirls who enjoy the sport of CAS, share
a love of history and folklore and have a common interest and respect for
the weapons of the Old West. |
| Cowboy Action shooting is the fastest
growing sport where men, women, boys and girls, young and old, have the
opportunity to wear western costumes/clothing and relive shooting scenarios
of the Old West. All clothing must be representative of the late 19th century,
B-western movies or a western TV series. The shooter decides what shooting
category to participate in, what persona/alias to adopt, what clothes to
wear and what shooting irons to exercise. |

Firearms must be originals or reproductions of firearms available
between the Civil War and 1899. Basic firearms utilized include single
action revolvers, lever action rifles and double-barreled, side by side,
pre 1899 pump or lever action shotguns. A shooters class or category is
determined by the type of six-gun, propellant and shooting style. There
are six basic categories: Traditional, frontier cartridge, modern, duelist,
gunfighter and frontiersman. The SASS Shooter's
Handbook should be consulted for firearm regulations and category descriptions. |
| SMR holds monthly shooting matches where individuals shoot steel
targets with live ammunition. Props, stages, aliases and period clothing
help create an aura of the American West of over 100 years ago. Matches
are scored based upon elapsed shooting time plus penalty points for missed
targets. Winning is not the primary goal: Safety is of paramount importance
to the club. Safety is everyone's responsibility and it is vital for everyone's
enjoyment. Having fun, shooting old-time firearms and socializing with
fellow cowboys and cowgirls are what we do the fourth weekend of each month
at our range in Willard, Mo. Please come join us! |
