Entertainment

The Honkytonk Renovators

The Honkytonk Renovators, four impressively talented musicians in their own right, are putting a fresh spin on Grand Ol’ Opry favorites. Their sound embraces the traditional country style while renovating it with fresh sounds ranging from country swing to rockabilly. Set lists include Townes Van Zandt’s “White Freightliner Blues,” Johnny Cash’s “Cocaine Blues” and one of the most energetic versions of Bill Monroe’s “OrangeBlossom Special” audiences have ever heard.
The Renovators are:
• John Wynn Jr., fiddle and vocals: Wynn, who started playing fiddle at the tender age of 10 and started winning national fiddling competitions at the age of 12, has opened for some of country music’s greatest performers.
• Stevie Newman, lead guitar and vocals: Newman has been the power behind a variety of bands, including the notable Domino Kings. NPR’s music critic Ken Tucker said Newman “has the plummy voice of a true country music melancholic” in a highly positive nationally broadcast review of the Kings’ “Some Kind of Sign.” Newman’s “country music is so hard-core it ends up rocking out,” Tucker said.
• Steve Graham, drums and vocals: Graham got hooked on drums in 1990 after being hired as a band’s sound guy. He didn’t know much about either, but quickly found out he was pretty good at both. He focused on drums and has performed with several bands since then. Graham says the energy level of the Honkytonk Renovators is unlike anything he’s ever experienced. “I don’t know if I’ve ever felt that with other groups.”
• Jack Pearman, upright bass: Pearman got busy with his first bass at the age of 14 when he and his buddies put together a little band. His focus quickly turned to bluegrass and he’s never looked back. “That’s what I’ve been doing ever since. I just love the music, the traditional sound.” Pearman has played professionally with a couple of bands and toured from New York to Texas.
