At Outlaw Range the Old West lives again when cowboys and cowgirls strap on their gun leather and take to the firing line. Participants range in age from early teens to over 80 years, making competition and spectating fun for the whole family.
Cowboy Action ShootingTM, the fastest growing shooting sport in America, requires contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the Old West; single action revolvers, lever action rifles and double barrel, pump or lever action shotguns - originals or reproductions from the Civil War through 1899. Competing cowboys and cowgirls must also adopt an alias appropriate to a character or profession of the last half of the 19th century or a Hollywood western character or star and then costume themselves accordingly.
Competitions are unqiuely "Old West." While armed and costumed as previously described, shooters race the clock shooting perscribed patterns at steel targets set up on the 12 stages at Outlaw Range. From Boot Hill through the Train and Miss ChaChing's School for Wayward Cowboys and Cowgirls, to J.H. West Mercantile through Moonshine Dan's Saloon and the Gun Shop, each stage is designed as an Old West vignette with unique challenges and appropriate props and settings. Scoring is based on time plus penalties (additional time) for misses and procedurals (shooting targets out of sequence).
Depending upon the details of the match, a typical day of competition will start by 9:30 a.m. (Check our Event Calendar for detials of specific events.) Competitors will shoot five to seven stages with competition ending in the early afternoon.
